New installed capacity broke a record
The African Solar Energy Industry Association recently released the “Solar Energy Annual Outlook 2024: A Review of the status quo of solar energy in African countries” report shows that in 2023, Africa’s new installed photovoltaic capacity of 3.74 gigawatts, an increase of 19%, setting a record, the total installed capacity reached 16.3 gigawatts. Among them, South Africa ranked first, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Kenya, Central African Republic, Cote d ‘Ivoire and Egypt and other countries in the new installed photovoltaic capacity in Africa also ranked first.
South Africa has the largest installed PV capacity in Africa. According to the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association, by the end of 2024, South Africa’s cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity is about 8.97 GW. At present, a total of 40 photovoltaic projects in South Africa have been tendered, with a total installed capacity of 8.526 GW, distributed in Free State Province, Limpopo Province, North West Province, Mpumalanga Province, Northern Cape Province and other places. In addition, the South African government has also introduced a series of policies to encourage the development of the photovoltaic industry in 2024, including simplifying the approval process of photovoltaic projects, so as to attract more investors to participate in the construction of photovoltaic projects in South Africa.
Many countries have introduced industrial support measures
Many African countries have taken the development of the photovoltaic industry as an important means to alleviate their own power shortages and achieve sustainable development. In March last year, Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Biteko attended the groundbreaking ceremony of Shinanga 50 MW photovoltaic power plant project. In March last year, according to the national renewable energy development Strategy, the Kenyan government launched the expansion of renewable energy investment plan, with the photovoltaic industry as one of the key development areas. The Cameroonian government announced that from January last year, it will exempt import duties and other taxes on photovoltaic equipment components to support the development of the renewable energy industry.
China-africa photovoltaic cooperation is deepening
In recent years, China and African countries have continuously deepened cooperation in the photovoltaic industry. According to the latest data, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power stations jointly built by China and Africa has exceeded 1.5 GW, providing support for Africa to alleviate energy shortage and cope with climate change.
