Since the beginning of this century, the installed capacity of large-scale ground mounted PV panels has been increasing almost every year, reaching a record high of 75GW in 2022. Preliminary data from Wiki Solar shows that by 2023, this number will jump to about 150GW, bringing the cumulative operational capacity to over 600GW.
Although Europe led the world in the first decade of this century, Asia has been dominant since then under the leadership of China and India. One of the highlights of last year's achievements was that other regions have also begun to play their role.
North America has the highest year-on-year growth rate of about 150%, while Asia has about 100%. South America has grown by 120% and has become an important contributor, surpassing 6% of global capacity additions by 2023.
Although China, the United States, and India, the three most important markets, continue to play important roles, several other countries are also showing strong growth momentum. Spain has added 6GWac of installed capacity, unquestionably ranking fourth in the world.
After the decline in installed capacity in 2022, the United States took a leap forward, driving growth of 150% in North and Central America. The United States has produced over 30GW of new large-scale ground photovoltaic capacity, more than twice the previous record. Texas alone contributed over 7.5 GW.
Asia has grown by 100%, and if the yet to be released fourth quarter data matches the huge growth in the third quarter, then China's total may be underestimated. India has also accelerated the construction pace of installed capacity and pending projects. These Asian solar superpowers have received strong support from Japan (although Japan's preliminary data is often underestimated) and are steadily advancing.
The installed capacity in Europe has increased by 75%, with Spain being the only European country to see a step change in growth rate. Thanks to the 10GWac pending project, this situation will continue at least in the short term.
Once ranked first, Germany has recently accelerated its pace by installing 3-4 GW of new power plants last year, curbing the downward trend in rankings. There are also signs that the UK has emerged from a downturn, but it is still below its peak in 2015. France stumbles forward, seemingly striving to maintain a low profile.
The Netherlands has recently been one of the best performing countries on the European continent, at least relative to its land area. Portugal has also made good progress. Italy and Greece have performed relatively poorly, partly due to regulatory difficulties, but both countries seem to have seen some growth recently.
Overall, the photovoltaic industry has been thriving, with regions and countries strengthening their support and investment in the renewable energy industry. Faced with the thriving scene of the photovoltaic industry, MULTIFIT will continue to increase investment in design and research and development, enhance innovation hard core strength, promote high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement, and win market scale with good products. Over the past decade, MULTIFIT has designed, developed, and updated numerous solar products, such as solar electric cleaning brushes, fully automatic solar cleaning robots, off grid inverters, off grid inverters with MPPT controllers, solar controllers, etc. In the future, MULTIFIT will continue to ride the wind and waves, search and produce new products, serve a wider range of people, and contribute to promoting sustainable development and solving environmental problems through green and clean energy.
